Alexey Brodovitch
Alexey Brodovitch was a Russian
photogropher most notable for his working with Harpers Bazaar magazine from
1938-1585. His original dream was to become a painter, he lived in Paris after his work in the Russian army. During this time he was
exposed to many different cultures which influenced him to become a designer. He
began working as a free lance graphic arts designer around Paris where he finally got his first big break. His first job was working
with the design studio Athelia where he was responsible for illustrating
catalogues and advertisements for their luxury men’s boutique. “Brodovitch embraced technical developments from the spheres of
industrial design, photography, and contemporary painting”. After
working for a while he began talking interest in teaching, he began working at the
Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art as the head of the school's
Advertising Design Department. During this time he worked and trained
many very famous photographers including Richard Avedon. In 1934 he began to
work at Harpers Bazaar magazine. Originally contracted to work on a design for
the “13th Annual Art Directors Exhibition”, Carmel Snow however saw more
and decided to hire him as someone who could transform the magazine and carry
it into the future. “This elegance, combined with an element of innovation was
the ideal mix for a fashion magazine”. He died in 1971 but his creative
work and innovation will be remembered for years to come.
