Black and White vs. Color Photography

People often consider black and white to be the more pure form of photography.  Black and white and color photographs vary because they offer a difference in contrast.  Black and white is more about the difference between light and shadow, where are color shows more definition between different colors, not just shades.  Black and white forces people to look harder at the photo.  Some photos are better in color because things can simply be lost in black and white.  Black and white photo subjects are things with a specific focus, more than just one large structure with many different parts that make it up.  Dominant shapes and lines of objects can make great black and white photography, whereas color photography can be of structures or detailed scenes.  There are some things that are better shot in black and white and others that are better shot in color.

A photograph that does not lose anything by being in black and white rather than in color.

A photograph that is much better suited in color than in black and white because it is necessary to see the stark contrast in the colors of the buildings, the color of the rocks, the water and the sky.  This photograph would be much less impressive in black and white.
